Overview
Baum Publications partnered with Mitchell Press to redesign two of its industry magazines, Heavy Equipment Guide and Recycling Product News. I worked closely with their team to develop two distinct but connected editorial identities that would modernize the publications while improving readability, consistency and production efficiency.
The project included the complete redesign of both magazines, comprehensive style guides and flexible Adobe InDesign templates for ongoing production. Once the new systems were established, I trained Baum Publications’ in-house team to use the templates and apply the design standards confidently across future issues.
Editorial Design System
Each publication was given its own brand identity guide with colour palette, imagery and editorial personality while sharing a consistent approach to typography, grids and page structure. Colour-coded sections, clear hierarchy and flexible layout options helped make complex industry content easier to navigate while maintaining continuity between the two magazines.
Designed for Production
As part of the redesign, the magazines moved from an oversized newspaper-style format to a standard size. Although the client was initially concerned about preserving advertising space, the new format reduced printing and production costs while creating opportunities for additional pages and custom advertising placements.
I built flexible InDesign templates, documented each system through a complete style guide and trained the in-house team to produce future issues. The new system ultimately helped Baum Publications save both time and money.
