All in the Journey

Travel memoir and book design for author Rosemary Manarin

Client: Rosemary Manarin
Role: Book design, cover design, image treatment and production preparation
Content: Personal stories and archival photography

Overview

As a designer at Mitchell Digital, I designed All in the Journey, a biographical collection of Rosemary Manarin’s travels around the world. The book brings together personal stories and vintage photographs, documenting the places she visited and the experiences she gathered along the way.

Design approach

I selected a typeface pairing that combines the familiarity of classical typography with subtle contemporary details. The display typeface has distinctive characteristics that add personality to the headings, while the serif body typeface supports comfortable, extended reading in print.

The archival photographs varied in quality and resolution. Rather than overcorrecting them, I allowed the grain, scratches and other imperfections to remain visible as part of their history. These qualities contribute to the nostalgic character of the book and reinforce the personal nature of Rosemary’s stories.

Cover design

The cover features a continuous photograph of Rosemary extending across the front, spine and back of the book. A vibrant orange gradient is layered over the image, bringing warmth, movement and energy to the composition while preserving the photograph’s vintage quality.

The final design balances reflection and nostalgia with the sense of curiosity and vitality that runs throughout Rosemary’s journey.
